On 10 October 2016, 64 Team Leaders and Support Staff from FCM Travel Solutions Australia descended upon Phnom Penh, Cambodia with the goal of building 6 houses for Cambodian families in need.
FCM partnered with the charity Habitat For Humanity Australia and Platinum Sponsor Singapore Airlines and undertook months of fundraising prior to the trip in order to provide homes for families living in poverty and with medical conditions such as HIV.
The wet weather didn’t deter the volunteers as they set to getting their hands dirty with tasks including bricklaying, rendering, cement mixing, preparing and laying bamboo flooring, not to mention taking the time for a quick game of footy with the local children! Over the course of three and-a-half days the houses were taken from foundations to finished structures.
As part of the project the future homeowners are encouraged to help with the building work and as such, strong bonds were forged between the volunteers and the families.
General Manager of FCM Australia James Kavanagh, said that he was extremely grateful for this occasion.
“We were thrilled to have the opportunity to give something back to the Cambodian families who welcomed us with open arms and cannot thank our clients, sponsors, donors and Habitat for Humanity enough for their support. FCM employees around the country are passionate about making a difference in their local and global communities and I am extremely proud to be a part of it” said James.
“It was encouraging to see each and every one of the FCM volunteers getting stuck in and having a go at tasks which some of us had no experience with. The event was physical, fun and quite emotional, resulting in lifelong bonds being formed within the team. I cannot express my gratitude enough to the incredible team at FCM.”

Team leader Cassandra Waring said that "Being given the opportunity to be able to go and volunteer in Cambodia with Habitat for Humanity and FCM was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life so far, and one that I will never forget."
"It was humbling, real, and had true purpose and meaning."
"It showed me that we can all push ourselves beyond our comfort zones when there is a real meaningful goal to achieve. We worked as a team, and in true FCM style - took the challenge on to accomplish as much as we could as fast as we could."
"This was a truly amazing emotional journey, and one that I am thankful was offered to me, as I will definitely part take in another build somewhere in the world in the future."
The week wrapped up with a dedication ceremony where the families were handed the keys to their new homes and a celebratory lunch was shared.
Once again, FCM would like to thank the Cambodian families, Habitat for Humanity, our clients, sponsors and volunteers for supporting this life-changing experience.
